RAFB Museum of Aviation

Just a few pictures from our trip to the Museum of Aviation in our hometown. This museum is quite large and continues to get bigger every time we go. It's filled so much aviation history. It's also FREE which amazes me because it really is a fantastic museum. Of course, if you're a three year old or a three month old, it doesn't quite hold your interest for more than about thirty minutes.

More from Lauer's Lodge

While in Ga, we also went to an SCA festival (like a mini-Renaissance festival). Well, it wasn't really a festival but more of a recruiting session. Despite the heat, it was nice to learn a few things. In the first picture, the gentlemen is telling Izzy about crossbow. She was surprisingly focused and attentive to the little lesson.
Couldn't resist posting this picture of Papa Lauer snuggling with Luke. These are the moments that make the hassels of travelling with two young children, a dog and a cat worthwhile.
We had been planning for weeks to surprise Sean's parents with a visit from Mark and Nancy too (Sean's brother and sister-in-law). Sean's mom was brought to tears as expected when they walked in. It was so nice to have the family together. Here's a picture of Uncle Mark coming to Izzy's rescue in the pool.
Sean's mom brought some hats out to protect our little heads. Couldn't resist putting Papa's hat on Luke. Such a pensive little cowboy.

Playing catch up.

So it has been a month since my last post. I figured I better get caught up before I get too far behind. Don't have nearly as much time to blog these days with Izzy and Sean both at home with Luke and myself. We've been staying pretty busy this summer. We took a trip to Georgia to visit family and give the kids such much needed grandparent time. We were there almost three weeks. We had a wonderful time but it is always good to return to your own routine and bed. Here are a few pictures of how we spent our time in Georgia...

We took full advantage of the pool at Lauer's Lodge (Sean's parents' house). Izzy was in the pool practically every day we were there. Luke even got his first swimming experience. He looked so cute in his swimming trunks and surfing shirt that I had to take a few pictures.

We were really surprised that Luke did not cry when we put him in the water. The water was pretty cold but he didn't seem to mind. He was pretty intrigued by the water.

While in Georgia, we also discovered Monkey Joes which we took Izzy to a few times. Monkey Joes has several indoor bounce houses for kids. Of course she had a blast. Truthfully, I did too as I went down a few slides myself. Wish we had an MJs near us. It's a perfect way to tire a 3 year old without having to melt in the heat.

Luke's mad skillz

Just a few photos to highlight Luke's development. He's such a strong boy. We replaced his Bumbo seat with the Bebe Pod. It's slightly larger and doesn't cramp his chunky thighs as much. He looks so much older in this picture to me than most 3 month olds. A couple of our friends say he looks like Popeye because of his meaty forearms. He really does have Popeye arms...so funny.
He's started using his hands with more purpose lately. He's recently started reaching for and grabbing objects like the rattle here. We usually give him something to explore while we attempt to eat dinner. He usually gives one of us just enough time to quickly eat before fussing for some attention--it's usually Sean since he inhales his food. Lucky me!

Izzy Files

Unlike many children who seem to attach themselves to one preferred item such as a toy or blanket, Izzy had never really favored any one item for more than a few days before moving on to something else. Ever since having Luke, however, she has become quite attached to one modest little doll she lovingly calls "my baby." She wants to take her baby everywhere we go and always makes sure she is well taken care of. I've already had to babysit my pseudo grandchild and have to frequently swaddle her for Izzy. Obviously she's mimicking me taking care of Luke and likely working through the mixed feelings she must have about all the changes his birth has brought to her life. She's been sick all this week and wanted much more of my attention than I can give. Sean and I are trying to stay patient with her and some of the very recent attention seeking behaviors she's been displaying but it has been hard, especially since I have also been quite ill. It's hard to say if her recent behaviors are a result of simply being a 3 year old, having a new sibling, or because she is sick--likely a combination of the three. She's still a wonderfully behaved little girl, but not the perfect angel we're accustomed to. Most of the parents I know all agree that 3 was the hardest year for them (aside from some of the teen years). I've been having many conversations with her about what jealousy is and she amazes me with her insight and understanding. She admits she's jealous when I feed Luke and that she doesn't like that I have to feed him so often. Despite this, she never says anything bad about her brother and continues to dote on him all the time. She's such a spectacular little girl. I hope Luke will some day realize how lucky he is to have her as his big sister.

The other day, Izzy propped herself in the recliner, put the boppy on her lap and pretended to nurse her doll. It was the first time she had pretended to nurse her baby which surprised me since she watches me feed Luke all the time. It is usually around this time that she suddenly needs her mommy to do things for her and she wants to lay or crawl on me. It can be so frustrating at times because it interferes with the whole bonding experience. I'm also worried she might accidentally fall on Luke with all her bustling about. Yet I know how difficult it must be for her, especially given how often and long Luke likes to eat.
Last Christmas, Izzy's grandparents sent her the Vtech PC Pal. She wasn't too interested in it back then as the controls seemed far to difficult for her. She recently has started playing with it more and more and we've been amazed at how quickly she has learned to play the games. She gets very focused and puts her whole body into it. Earlier in the week she was quick to grow frustrated with her limited skills, but recently, she has become more persistent and insistent on figuring it out herself.
Last week, Izzy moved her chairs together and put some pillows around it. She called me into her room and proudly declared she had built her baby a crib to sleep in. I dare not disassemble it as her baby naps there almost every day now. She even has me swaddle her baby tight and she makes sure to cover the baby up with a "warm and cozy" blanket. Snug as a bug in a rug as she says.

Summer fun

Sean and I had some more yard work to do this morning so Sean set up Izzy's pool in the backyard so that she could play while we worked. I decided to copy our neighbor's idea by moving the slide/swingset by the pool so she could slide in. I picked this playset up from the side of the road on trash day. Just love those free trash to treasure items. Luke will love this when he's a little older.
While we were clearing some grass, Sean found a snake. I was so shocked that Izzy was brave enough to pet it--just like her daddy! Because I know you're probably freaking out Starr, I will reassure you that Sean was holding the head tightly so that it couldn't hurt her even if it wanted to. Still, it took a lot for me not to squeal in terror but I'd prefer not to pass my silly fears on to my kids.

Schools Out!!!

The school year has finally ended much to Sean and Izzy's delight. We kicked off our summer vacation with some coloring and tummy time--do we know how to live it up or what?!?! Actually, Izzy was running a fever so we took it easy for a change. We're so proud of Izzy and her coloring skills. No more "scribble scrabble" as she calls it. Although I'd like to take credit for her budding fine motor skills, all the credit goes to her preschool teachers. As you can see in this picture, she is very focused on staying in the lines.
After spending time indoors, we decided to take advantage of the sunshine by going for a walk before the rains came. Izzy proudly wears the sun visor she made at school. We're making her walk the whole time to burn up what seems to be an endless supply of energy. If only they could bottle the energy of a three-year old. Imagine what we adults could accomplish!
Later in the afternoon, after mommy mowed the lawn and Sean trimmed some of the plants, we enjoyed some juicy watermelon. Can you tell we're from Georgia? Ha!
